A stethoscope

In a city known for its rainy weather and iconic coffee culture, one Seattle resident has found a new lease on life amid personal health challenges.

At just 25 years old, the Premera member faced a life-altering diagnosis of type 1 diabetes following a severe episode of diabetic ketoacidosis in December 2024.  Having recently relocated to Seattle from Colorado, the young professional found himself grappling with this new reality far from his primary support system.

“Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes was overwhelming, especially in a new city where I felt alone,” he shared. “But Premera Blue Cross was there for me every step of the way.”

Premera’s dedicated clinicians stepped in, offering more than just medical advice. They provided a lifeline of empathy and encouragement, coaching the member to openly share his diagnosis with close friends and coworkers to build a local support network. Through active listening and motivational interviewing, Premera’s team of personal health support clinicians empowered him to self-advocate and effectively communicate his needs and concerns.

Education was also key in his journey. The clinicians shared information about type 1 diabetes, such as the importance of foot care, regular eye exams, and carbohydrate counting. This ensured he had the tools necessary to manage his condition confidently.

“Premera’s approach was different,” he noted. “They genuinely cared about my overall well-being, not just managing my diabetes.”

Thanks to this holistic approach, this member made quick progress. Over four months, he successfully brought his dangerously high blood sugar levels down to a healthy range, avoided being readmitted to the hospital, and attended appointments to address the rest of his health, too.

Today, he expresses gratitude for the assistance from Premera Blue Cross, his family, and newfound friends in Seattle. “I’m finally finding confidence in my new normal,” he shared with a smile. “I couldn’t have done it without the incredible support I received.”
